The restaurant chosen for the meeting with Alessandro and Gianna was located through a warren of backstreets, far removed from the network of tourist cafés on the seafront. It was one of Nina’s favorite places in the city; she loved how the tall buildings retained the heat long after the sun had gone down.

Alessandro and Gianna had arrived before them and were already sipping their beers in the open-air dining area when they entered from the street.

“Great to see you all.” Alessandro jumped to his feet to greet them. “Timothy.” He slapped his old school friend on the back. “And Lorenzo, you have recovered?”

“Nina, you are looking so much better as well.” Gianna smiled at her friend, a roguish glint in her eye. “Being in love suits you,” she whispered behind a menu. “Should we expect any dramatic announcements?”

“Not at the moment.” Nina fanned herself with a menu. Arching an eyebrow, Gianna decided to drop the topic. Nina had remained stubbornly single while all of her friends were getting engaged and married, but Gianna could see all of that about to change.

“Nina has got her leathers for the track,” Lorenzo announced when the waiter left with their order.

“What?” Gianna gasped. Nina was the most stylish of them; she couldn’t imagine her in rally clothes.

“Yes.” Lorenzo was passing around the photo of Nina in her outfit, his eyes beaming with pride. “We plan on taking the track by storm!”

Gianna looked from the photo to Nina. “You are going rallying?”

"Yes," Nina answered, "and you are joining me. After which, we are all going to watch Timothy play for his club."

“Yes, the beautiful game,” Lorenzo added. “Attended by all the beautiful women.”

“Careful, Timothy,” Alessandro warned. “I can foresee you falling in love with an Italian woman as well.”

“And why not?” Timothy asked. “I seem to spend most of my time in Italy. Perhaps it’s time to look for a signora. Although I don’t have the charm of you guys.”

They were still laughing when the waiter returned with their starter.
